Another Start, Another Opportunity

Monday, Monday, can't trust that day.  Tomorrow, Monday August 6, 2012, is the first day of my 37th year as an elementary school principal.  Yes, it really does seem like just yesterday that I started this journey.  So, I will trust Monday, Monday.  I know how important public school education is to the lives of children and I am excited to start a new year.

For 32 of the 37 years, I have served as principal of the same school.  We have a faculty of 37 teachers.  What amazes me is - for 34 of those 37 teachers I made the recommendation to hire them as an education professional.

The three teachers I didn't recommend are as old as I am, imagine that.  And, I wouldn't trade them for anyone or anything.  So, I may be the luckiest school principal alive.  I lead 37 teachers who support my vision of learning.  And, they are the best teachers on the planet.

Work cannot get any better.  In fact, I am not even sure spending the day with 780 students, 18 staff members, and 37 teachers should be called work; it is school after all.

Tomorrow, we begin our journey to engage each student in active and meaningful learning.  Tomorrow, we assist each boy and girl to gain relevant knowledge, deep understanding, and skillful performance.  We do this because community, knowledge, understanding, and performance are our mission.

Test scores and numbers in the newspapers will not be our means of evaluation.  Our measure of success will be the lives of children we touch.

Monday, Monday, I trust that day.  I trust we at Silver Creek Elementary will succeed in our mission. Thirty-seven great teachers educators can not be stopped!
